Service Projects & Benevolence

Special Olympics
Since 1979, the Civitan Club of Wichita has been involved in Special Olympics. First with financial support at the 1979 International Summer Special Olympics games at Brockport, NY, continuing with State and Area Games involvement to the present. The club has provided monetary and personnel support at each level.
Salvation Army
Each year members participate in the Salvation Army's Bell Ringing to assist in raising funds for the needy during the Christmas season. Assistance has also included School Supplies and other programs.
Scholarships
Our Club cooperates with Friends University in the administration of a scholarship fund established in memory of the late Civitan Howard Walker and increased in the name of Harold Budke. We also sponsor individuals for competitive scholarship awards from Civitan International. Funds have been added to the Civitan International Foundation Scholarship Endowment in honor of club members.
Removal of Architectural Barriers
The Civitan Club of Wichita took an active part in conducting a survey of Wichita buildings and infrastructure for architectural barriers, which made it difficult for persons with mobility restrictions to have appropriate access to public and private facilities. Recommendations and follow-up resulted in improved access many years prior to the federal government's ADA.
